There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing an incredible young girl do really well," said model and style guru Alexandra Spencer in a recent post on 4th and Bleeker, her cutting-edge fashion blog. Spencer was talking about Elissa McGowan, "my absolute favourite new Australian designer", but she might as well have been referring to her own career.
Sydney-born Spencer's blog "is just my point of view and what I like. It started as a way for me to style and photograph, to wear great clothes and create a look," says Spencer over coffee in LA. With a sunny personality and a rigorous work ethic, Spencer moved to New York to model, and started her blog. "It became very popular very quickly," she says. "It was like a package deal: you could model and have an online following."
Spencer, 24 and single, now leads an enviable globetrotting, five-star lifestyle, "drinking whisky highballs, singing karaoke... shooting on the streets of Tokyo with my girlfriend, Ilona," she blogs. She has modelled for Vogue Australia, as well as working with Louis Vuitton, J Brand and the luxury Viceroy Hotel Group. Spencer is accessible; she also has a sense of humour. Followers know that she loves everything French ("magnifique") and anyone "with an EU passport".
An astute businesswoman, Spencer is building a distinctive brand. In her latest venture, she's collaborated with iconic Australian label Billabong to design a new capsule collection - and Sunday Style has an exclusive sneak peek. "Billabong is quintessentially Australian. I grew up on the beach, so this is so exciting. I wanted to create the perfect holiday wardrobe that you could chuck in a suitcase and take to the south of France: perfect jeans, a good tank top, good shirts."
Her fashion advice? "Have fun. Fashion is meant to be something that makes your day better, not something that stresses you out." And Spencer's own style? "Half the time I dress like a '90s Calvin Klein ad, very minimal, and the rest of the time I'm dressed like an Italian mistress. When I'm running around the city, I have a uniform of black jeans with a black shirt, because people spill things on you all day. It's all about comfort."
