Billabong Pro Tahiti: Day Four
Today started out slow with a delay in the newly approaching swell for the second to last day of the Billabong Pro Tahiti waiting period. However, at around noon local time the call was made to begin competition and the fireworks began. Starting with the last four heats of round 3, Jeremy Flores and CJ Hobgood blew up in their heats. Jeremy used his go-for-broke approach in the tricky conditions to nab two of the ledgiest waves of the day, beating out Joel Parkinson in the process. In CJ Hobgoods heat he had Julian Wilson who, with a win, had the chance of taking the overall ratings lead. It was a slow heat, but CJ ended up nabbing a bomb and pitting himself deep inside and then emerging after the majority of spectators had wrote him off. CJ's score for his efforts was a perfect 10, the first of the event.
In round 4, the second heat saw a trio of Brazilian countrymen doing battle in Italo Ferreira, Gabriel Medina and Bruno Santos. Bruno posted a nine early on, but then Gabriel took control with a near-perfect 9.97 and another high eight as a backup score, putting him straight through to the quarterfinals. In the final heat of the day, Kelly Slater, CJ Hobgood and Jeremy Flores battled it out in tough conditions. In the end it was Kelly who was able to come out on top with last second heroics in a 9.77 ride that put him ahead of Jeremy.
Tomorrow a winner will be decided with steadily easing swell and offshore wins predicted. It should be an absolutely insane finish to the event so make sure to tune in at 7am local time via worldsurfleague.com.
