Billabong Pro Tahiti: Day One
Today we woke to solid swell blitzing the reef at Teahupoo in the 6-12 feet(on the face) range, however the start of the competition was delayed due to wind conditions out of the south. At 9:30am local time the decision to start the contest was made which began with Kelly Slater putting on a show of his own in the first heat of the day with a pair of mid range sevens.
As round one went on, highlights from the day included wildcards Aritz Aranburu and Bruno Santos with big heat wins as Aritz earned the highest wave score of the day with an 8.17. By the early afternoon conditions had deteriorated quite a bit with the wind strengthening out of the south. At that point a decision was made to call the contest off for the day after finishing with heat 8 of round 1 which Joel Parkinson won.
Everyone will be back for what looks to be the rest of round 1 heats and round 2 tomorrow for hopefully an 8am local time start as swell remains solid and wind conditions should improve. Check back with us for more!
