Dean Bowen and Keanu Asing Win ISA World Titles
Billabong has scored a daily double at the Quiksilver ISA Amateur World Junior Titles in Ecuador over night with team riders Dean Bowen (AUS) and Keanu Asing (HAW) winning the U/18 and U/16 titles respectively.
Bowen fought his way through 7 repocharge heats to make the final in the 18’s and didn’t look back, setting up an early lead and then nailing it with a 9.10 in the final moments. His win lifted team Australia into their fourth consecutive overall team victory.
“I feel on top of the world,” said Bowen after the win. “This is by far the biggest win of my life. I train for this contest all year, it's what I do. I am stoked, I cannot believe we won. I would like to dedicate this win to my late mother whom I lost when I was nine years old, and to my father who is recovering from knee surgery back at home.”
Keanu also had to fight his way through the repocharge rounds to make the U/16’s final against Brazilian duo Gabriel Medina and Jesse Mendes and South African David Brand. In a tight battle against Medina, the young Hawaiian held tight, getting the better of the scoring with an 8.50 and a 9.04.
“This is the biggest thing I have ever won,” said Asing. “I am so stoked to have pulled through the repo’s. I think the loss in round four actually helped me. It made me more charged up and more focused. I knew I had to get good waves because every heat could have been my last.”
The wins make it back-to-back titles for Billabong, with Tamaroa McComb winning the 16’s in 2008. A huge congratulations go to Dean and Keanu from your family at Billabong. Nice one boy’s, real nice.
