• ISLAND HOPPING IN THE GALAPAGOS

Flic wrote us a little piece on her trip to the Galapagos... we are officially green with envy.

"I just got back from a phenomenal trip to the Galapagos Islands, hosted by Contiki Holidays. They invited bloggers, TV personalities and presenters, travel editors and yours truly to join Celine Cousteau on a fantastic underwater adventure. Celine is a world renowned explorer, environmentalist and filmmaker who has teamed up with Contiki to promote sustainable tourism and protect the worlds culturally and ecologically sensitive areas. The trip will be turned into a documentary focusing on marine conservation in the Galapagos and will premier in Sydney later this year.

Our journey to the Galapagos Islands started in Quito, the Capital of Ecuador. From Quito we flew to Guayaquil and then on to the Island of Baltra. The Galapagos Islands sit right on the equator and they are like nothing I've ever seen before. They are desert, come tropical jungle, and they are absolutely stunning. I joined Celine as she Island hopped her way around this amazing marine reserve. We were met by Shark Savers on the Island of San Cristobal, where the experience of diving with sharks and mantas awaited us.

We anchored in the waters of San Cristobal and, scared of what I knew lurked beneath us and unsure of what was to come, I tentatively threw myself over the edge of the boat. In a flurry, I adjusted my goggles and dived deeper. I finally focused through the curtain of bubbles and realised that I was submersed with a birds eye view of hundreds of sharks below.

Seeing one shark is frightening enough, but looking down and seeing a massive shiver of sharks that completely cover the ocean floor is overwhelming. However, there was something quite peaceful and serene about being underwater with no noise and watching these prehistoric, majestic creatures navigate through their natural habitat.

It was an experience I will never forget. I made new friends, faced my fears and survived to tell the tale, all appendages intact."
