Taj's Small Fries 2014
West Australian professional surfer Taj Burrow has joined forces once again with long-term sponsor Billabong, the City of Busselton and Surfing Western Australia to ensure the return of WA’s most iconic junior surfing event, the Taj’s Small Fries Yallingup in January 2014.
The ninth annual Taj’s Small Fries is set to attract some of Australia’s best junior surfing talent and their families to the wave-rich coastline of Yallingup that Burrow himself grew up surfing.
The specialty event for boys and girls aged 16 and under will
officially launch Surfing WA's 2014 events program from the 17th – 19th
Unlike standard surfing events, Taj Burrow will be on hand to mentor the young competitors, ensuring the kids are having fun and enjoying all that Yallingup has to offer.
“There’s so many good waves around Yallingup and each year we’ve lucked out and scored near perfect conditions.” Burrow said.
“Every Small Fries we seem to get the most ideal little waves for the groms and I’m blown away by how much the kids rip.” He said.
The event, which first started back in 2006 has become a rite of passage for many young surfers in Australia, with previous winners including South-West locals Creed McTaggart (Margaret River), Jacob Willcox (Margaret River), Shaun Manners (Margaret River), and Jack Robinson (Margaret River).
Joining the impressive list of local winners is a collection of the very best East Coast surfers who have conquered the waves of Yallingup to take the prized Small Fries trophy across the Nullarbor. 2013 winner Kai Hing (Sunshine Coast, QLD), along with Soli Bailey (Byron Bay, NSW), Zoe Clarke (Torquay, VIC) and Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW), have gone on to bigger and better things after claiming prestigious Small Fries titles in the past.
Divisions will cover 16/U Boy’s, 16/U Girl’s, 14/U Boy’s, 14/U Girl’s, 12/U Boy’s and 12/U Girl’s.
The event has again been bolstered by the continued support of the City of Busselton, with CEO Mike Archer commenting on their involvement, saying:
"Taj’s Small Fries is a celebration of local initiative and talent. We have some amazing young surfing talent here in the South West and across Australia. This event both nurtures and showcases this talent and we look forward to once again welcoming participants and spectators to the Yallingup region.”
Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks is excited to once again be hosting this iconic event in such an amazing part of the state.
"Taj is such a role model for many young surfers across the world and this event attracts the very best of them to Yallingup each year." He said.
