The North Shore Journal- Day One
Today everyone awoke to 12-15 ft waves blitzing the Pipeline, and the call was made to begin round one of the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons. With non-elimination heats, everyone seemed to be getting their feet in the wax and familiar with Pipe if they weren’t already.
Standouts from the day included Italo Ferriera, John John Florence and Kai Otton, but the guy who really stole the show was CJ Hobgood. CJ is retiring after this event and is truly leaving a mark on the tour with the way he’s going out. He paddled into the first 10-point ride of the event, threading through an insane barrel where most surfers would’ve fallen.
CJ’s tube ride was hands down the highlight of the day, but it’s definitely just the tip of the iceberg for what we’re about to see in the coming days. Make sure to check back tomorrow morning at 8am local time for a possible start!
