The surfing heats up at day two of the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp.
Day two of the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, presented by Flight Centre saw the remainder of the U/16 Boys battle it out for the round three qualifying positions and the first round of the U/14 Boys light it up in epic Duranbah conditions.
Continuing to show his fellow competitors that he is a force to be recon with was Caloundra (QLD) local Noah Kearney. Kearney’s combined heat total of 17.93 points (out of a possible 20 points) was enough to hold out a late attack from Toby Mossop (Burleigh Heads, QLD) who jumped into second position with a needed score in the dying minutes. Both Kearney and Mossop will now surf in round three later this week as they move one step closer to the prestigious blue ribbon U/16 Boys title.
If there was any doubt about the standard of junior surfing the U/14 Boys blew it away and showed that the future of surfing is in great hands. Tane Bowden (Jan Juc, VIC) wasted no time warming into the competition after he had the field in combination in the opening minutes and left his fellow competitors to try and better his 17.17 total point score.
In one of the performances of the day Dakota Walters (Angourie, NSW) showed patience is a virtue as he waited until the dying minutes to lock in a near perfect individual wave score of 9.67 (out of possible 10 points). Walters will carry this confidence through to the second round in a bid to etch his name on one of the most desired trophies on any grommets wish list.
For both Saturday and Sunday the Fun Run Colour Dome will be set up on beach to give the groms the chance to paint the town red, or at least themselves. The colour dome will be running between 10am and 2pm on the weekend.
As added value the man himself Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo will select one lucky grom to partake in a ‘money can’t buy’ surf trip experience. The winner will be announced by Occy at the presentations on Thursday afternoon.
The 2015 Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, presented by Flight Centre will be based at Duranbah on Queensland’s Gold Coast from Saturday 27th June to Thursday 2nd July.
The Billabong Occy's Grom Comp, presented by Flight Centre is proudly supported by Surfing World Magazine, Kustom, Kirra Surf, JS Surfboards, Vonzipper, Stryker Media, Fast Proof Press, Blue Dinosaur and Surfing Queensland.
