TRAVEL DIARIES; Tulum, Mexico
This season we continued our Bikini Kinda Life adventures in travel hot spot Tulum.
A far cry from the cactus and sombreros, this beachside village boasts crystal blue Carribean waters, sandy beachs and palm trees contrasted with culture, creativity and a serious amount of cool factor.
Below are our top 10 must dos in Tulum:
1. COCO TULUM
White washed walls, thatched roofs and white sandy pathways - Coco Tulum is everything you imagine the picturesque Tulum to be. We stayed right on the sand only a few feet to the crystal waters of the Caribbean Sea, in this quaint and humble setting. More reminiscent of a village than a resort Coco Tulum was relaxed and laid back during the day and a hive of margaritas and music as the sun set.
2. SWINGS AND SHELL SHOWER AT COCO’s BEACH BAR
One of the most instagrammable spots on this coastline. The Coco’s beach bar has these cool wooden swings that make for an epic photo against blue ocean backdrop. There’s also the cutest shell shower to wash off the salt and sand.
3. MATCHA MAMA
Our local fave for bullet coffee, acai bowls and smoothies. Another super cute instagrammable backdrop too with white walls, thatched roof and of course rope swings.
4. POSADA MARGARITA
What can we say…we ate here every second meal. It is the most divine little eclectic gem in Tulum. The coffee is incredible and the food simple Italian that will have you leaving full and happy. The owners are passionate about their little slice of paradise and making sure every visit is relaxed and enjoying their holiday.
5. TULUM TOWN
The hustle and bustle of Tulum Town is everything you’d expect from cold coconut stands, to rug stalls, mariachi singers and the most delicious local cuisine. Despite amazing restaurants is the tourist areas it’s where the local eat that you’ll find the best fish tacos and margaritas and a meal at Don Cafeto is definitely a must. There were amazing murals and coloured walls and beautiful bougainvillea everywhere.
You have to see this place to believe it. An incredible hotel and mutli –level bar that is more like something out of the jungle book. It’s made of sticks and ropes and there are these incredible nets you can relax in that suspend above the lower levels. There are also these amazing pods that sit up above the resort that you can sit in and look out over the yucutan jungle. Unbelievably expensive but so worth a visit even for just one drink.
7. CALETA TANKAH
Little did we know driving up this palm lined sandy road we would fine the jewel in the crown of Tulum, a little ‘caleta’ (bay) with the most stunning crystal blue water. This was a wonderful place to spend the afternoon, it was fun and lively and the water incredible. The beach club itself was quite old and quirky but the natural setting beautiful. A short walk through the jungle track was a stunning cenote surrounded by palms.
8. BE TULUM
An incredibly cool resort with the best breakfast in town. There was a great ambiance and we sat right on the sand on cushions for our meal. There was an amazing smoke haze from the sandalwood they burn to keep the bugs away but it made for an incredible haze and with the morning light shining through it was magical.
9. I SCREAM BAR
A cool little set up and the best icecream treats.
10. COQUI COQUI COBA
Resembling a Mayan Temple this enchanting stone sanctuary is something out of a fairytale – there is even a vine covered wooden bridge connecting the third floor residence. On the shore of a serene fresh water lake and surrounded by the Yucatan jungle, Coqui Coqui is the epitome of effortless style. This romantic setting has the most beautifully curated artisian textiles and ceramics perfectly placed throughout as well as a spa and perfumery.
