Who's In the Billabong Pro Tahiti Trials?
It won't be long before the surfing world descends on Tahiti to watch what's sure to be one of the most exciting tour stops of the year. We all know that the big boys - John John, Kelly, Gabs, etc. - will be out in the line up on August 19 but what about the boys competing in the trials? Billabong has a few fresh faces who will be battling it out for a spot in the main event. Here's a quick intro to the seven team riders in the Billabong Pro Tahiti 2016 trials -
1. Josh Moniz
Josh has been climbing up the QS rankings and is currently sitting at 32nd with strong free surfing to pair with his competitive tact. He'll be one of the favorites heading into the trials as he's ultra comfortable in heavy water.
2. Seth Moniz
The youngest of the Moniz brothers is a QS veteran at this point and has skill in all kinds of waves. Seth can throw it on rail, take it to the air or charge like a maniac. A heavy backside barrel isn't going to phase this kid.
3. Finn McGill
At just 16 years old, Finn has already had some massive results on the QS this year, including a 2nd place finish at the Rangiroa Open Pro in Tahiti. Being from Hawaii, Finn is no stranger to hollow waves like Teahupoo.
4. Kai Hing
Kai is a fiery young Australian with talent in everything from 2-foot shore break slop to pumping tubes. He's not necessarily known for excelling in reef passes but he's got the skills to make it happen.
5. Victor Bernardo
Hailing from Brazil, Victor Bernardo is an accomplished young professional who's gaining recognition all over the world. He'll being looking to leave his mark by showing the world that he can handle throaty barrels at Chopes.
6. Jack Robinson
He's hands down the favorite to win the trials, if not the favorite to win the main event itself. Jack has a unique relationship with Teahupo'o and Tahiti in general. He finds perfect positioning in the scariest of waves out at Chopes and with a relaxed style, he's an absolute pleasure to watch.
7. Griffin Colapinto
At only 17, Griffin is one of the youngest competitors in the trials but he surfs beyond his years. Griff has taken it to a new level in the past couple of years and has the ability to win any heat he enters. Keep your eyes on Griff.
